Kolkata Construction Material Dispute Triggers Assault Complaint

A singer has filed a written complaint at Haridevpur police station alleging that he was assaulted, threatened with murder and held at an undisclosed location after objecting to the illegal dumping of construction materials in Kolkata’s Behala area. The complaint names a BJP leader from Behala West and eight others.

The complainant, identified as 42-year-old Pintu Konch, lives in the Sukanta Sarani area of Barisha. According to the report by Bartaman Patrika, the dispute began at around 10.30 pm on October 29, when Konch objected to construction materials being dumped illegally in Sukanta Sarani, which falls under Ward 124 of the Behala East Assembly constituency.

Konch has alleged that between 14 and 15 people attacked him the following morning. He claimed that the group used hockey sticks, helmets and wooden batons to assault him, causing injuries including to his genital area. He further alleged that he was taken away in a vehicle and detained at an unidentified location, where he was assaulted again.

After being released, Konch underwent a medical examination at Vidyasagar Hospital, according to the report. He has alleged that when he attempted to approach the police, he received a phone call from the main accused and was pressured not to file a first information report. The complainant said he was told that objecting to the dumping was wrong and that he would face consequences for protesting.

Konch subsequently approached Haridevpur police station and submitted a written complaint naming the BJP leader and eight other people. The report identifies the alleged political connection as involving a BJP leader from Ward 126 in the Behala West Assembly constituency. The allegations have not been independently established, and no response from the named leader or the other accused was included in the supplied report.

The complaint places a routine neighbourhood dispute over construction-material disposal within a wider question of how building supplies are stored, transported and dumped in dense residential areas. Unauthorised roadside or vacant-plot dumping can obstruct movement, affect adjoining properties and create safety risks for residents, although the supplied report does not establish whether any municipal action had previously been taken over the alleged dumping.

Police have confirmed that the complaint was received, according to the report. Officers are examining the account of the incident and are expected to take legal action after completing a preliminary inquiry. The police response, including any decision on registration of a formal case and action against those named, remains the next official stage in the matter.
