Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is under scrutiny after reports surfaced of structural issues at the Elamkulam metro station, prompting calls for comprehensive safety measures across the Aluva-MG Road-Thripunithura metro corridor. Concerns arose when cracks were discovered at the base of girders and beams on June 12, leading to immediate remedial actions including the removal of deteriorated concrete sections exposing underlying steel rods.
In response to the incident, KMRL has engaged Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) to conduct a thorough safety audit of all 24 metro stations. This audit aims to identify any potential structural vulnerabilities and provide recommendations to ensure long-term safety and durability of the metro infrastructure, which is vital for sustaining operational integrity over the coming decades.
According to experts familiar with civil engineering practices, the exposure of steel rods due to inadequate concrete coverage could lead to rusting, particularly in humid and rainy conditions prevalent in Kochi. “While incidents of concrete cracking in metro systems are rare, it’s imperative for KMRL to enhance protective measures to safeguard against future occurrences,” remarked a civil works expert, highlighting the necessity for proactive maintenance strategies to uphold infrastructure longevity.
Internal inquiries within KMRL are also investigating the root causes behind the concrete cracks, examining factors ranging from construction techniques to environmental impacts like weather conditions.
