Kolkata: With the looming threat of heavy rainfall over the weekend, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is ramping up its preparations to tackle the perennial issue of waterlogging in the city’s non-sewer and low-lying areas.
Anticipating the potential inundation following every downpour, the civic body is deploying a range of measures to ensure swift drainage and mitigate the impact of flooding on residents. “We have initiated the deployment of 386 portable pumps across vast areas including Behala, Joka, EM Bypass, Garia, and the Garden Reach-Metiabruz belt to address inundation promptly. Additionally, preparations are underway to potentially evacuate residents who may be at risk of getting marooned due to waterlogging,” stated a KMC official. In addition to focusing on these vulnerable areas, the KMC is also prioritising the maintenance and operation of lock gates along the Hooghly River, recognising the heightened risk of flooding during high tides coinciding with heavy rainfall. “Extra manpower will be deployed to monitor our lock gates to mitigate the risk of flooding in city areas,” affirmed a civic official.
Furthermore, the KMC is bolstering its drainage infrastructure by ensuring round-the-clock staffing at major drainage pumping stations. Special sewer cleaning crews will also be deployed in waterlogging-prone areas to mitigate blockages and facilitate efficient water drainage. “These proactive measures are part of our preparedness plan to address the city’s inundation pockets in anticipation of the predicted rainfall. Following recent instances of street waterlogging, we are enhancing the functionality of major drainage pumping stations and ensuring the readiness of heavy-duty pumps to expedite stormwater drainage,” elaborated a civic official.
Moreover, the KMC has alerted the irrigation department to expedite dredging activities in heavily silted outfall canals, while the electricity department has been tasked with inspecting streetlights to prevent any potential hazards caused by loose wires. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s proactive approach underscores its commitment to enhancing the city’s resilience against flooding and ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents during the monsoon season.
