K’kata’s Kalighat Skywalk Project to Include New Road

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to embark on an ambitious expansion of the Kalighat skywalk project, focusing on enhancing the overall infrastructure in the region. This development includes construction of a new road, an adjoining footpath and an underground cable duct, designed to improve accessibility in the area.

Recently, the KMC approved the proposal for these infrastructure improvements, signalling a step forward for the project. The plan encompasses construction of a new road with a connecting footpath, along with ancillary works, at Kali Temple Road and Gurupada Halder Road. In addition, the KMC will develop footpath, including an underground cable duct along Kali Temple Road, spanning from Kalighat Road to SP Mukherjee Road.

The estimated cost of the road construction, including hot-mix for roadwork supplied by the KMC, is approximately INR 38,54,230. Simultaneously, the development of a footpath with an underground cable duct is expected to cost INR 14,23,922.

KMC acknowledged that the Kalighat Skywalk project has faced certain delays, and it is likely to surpass its initial deadline of December 2023. The primary challenge revolves around identifying the utility lines beneath the area. Many underground lines remain active and date back to the British era.
