In an effort to combat the persistent problem of traffic congestion on Delhi’s roads, the Delhi Traffic Police has undertaken a survey to identify 177 congestion points. These points, including 10 flyovers that experience high traffic volume during peak hours, have been singled out for potential interventions to alleviate traffic woes.
The identified congestion points are spread across six different traffic zones within the city and are plagued by a variety of issues contributing to traffic logjams. The causes of congestion range from heavy traffic, construction activities and encroachments.
To address these issues, the Traffic Police is taking several proactive measures. These include the regular deployment of staff at major intersections and travel corridors to ensure smooth traffic flow. Non-destined goods vehicles will be turned away from major border entry points. Furthermore, traffic signal timings will be reviewed.
The Traffic Police is also intensifying efforts against vehicles without valid pollution certificates, as well as stringent measures against old diesel and petrol vehicles. These efforts will include addressing vehicles that drive against the flow of traffic, violate restricted timings for goods vehicles, carry construction materials without proper covering or do not use designated lanes.
Delhi Police has been collaborating with road-owning and maintenance agencies to suggest traffic engineering interventions to improve traffic flow. These include closures and openings of cuts, construction of central verges, installation of road markings and signages, shifting of bus stops and electricity poles, and construction of pedestrian road cross-over facilities such as foot overbridges and subways.
