Khargone Drain Incident Kills 9-Year-Old Saving Sister

A nine-year-old girl died while trying to rescue her four-year-old sister after both fell into a drain near their home at Badgaon Ota in Madhya Pradesh’s Khargone district on Thursday afternoon, according to Kasrawad police. The younger girl was rescued by villagers and was reported to be stable after treatment.

The incident occurred in the Kasrawad police station area when the sisters were playing near their house and went close to a nearby drain, police said. Four-year-old Kirti fell into the muddy water, after which her elder sister, Abha, attempted to save her but became trapped in the mud.

Villagers reached the spot after the children fell into the drain and pulled both girls out. Abha had died by the time she was rescued, while Kirti was found in serious condition and taken to the government hospital in Kasrawad.

Kasrawad government hospital doctor Himanshi Patidar said Abha was brought dead. Kirti had water in her lungs and received initial treatment at the hospital before being referred to the district hospital for further care. Her condition was reported to be stable.

Kasrawad police station in-charge Indresh Tripathi said police reached the site and conducted inquest proceedings. A case of unnatural death, or marg, was registered in connection with Abha’s death.

Abha’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination and was later handed over to her family, according to the report. The available account did not specify the drain’s ownership, maintenance arrangements or whether any civic safety action had been ordered after the incident.

The incident highlights the immediate risks faced by children living or playing close to open or water-filled drainage channels, although the report does not establish whether the drain was officially classified as an open public facility or whether prior complaints had been made. Further details on the local administration’s response were not available in the supplied report.

Police proceedings and the medical examination are the next recorded steps in the case. Kirti is continuing treatment at the district hospital, where her condition was reported to be stable.
