Kerala Police has removed 102.49 tonnes of accumulated waste and 5,115 abandoned or unusable vehicles from police station premises across the state under its newly launched ‘My Police Station’ initiative, in one of the largest reported clean-up drives involving government facilities in Kerala.
The waste and vehicles had remained piled up for years inside and around police stations. The drive aims to clean and reorganise station surroundings while helping transform police stations into more accessible service centres for complainants and other members of the public.
Kozhikode city recorded the largest quantity of waste cleared, at 12,121kg, followed by Ernakulam rural with 11,001.49kg and Thrissur city with 10,901kg. The figures indicate that the accumulation was spread across different police jurisdictions rather than being limited to a single station or district.
Ernakulam rural recorded the highest number of vehicles removed, with 563. Palakkad followed with 525 vehicles, while Kollam city ranked third with 521. The vehicles were described as abandoned or unusable and had occupied space within and around police station compounds.
The ‘My Police Station’ project has been implemented by the home department with the stated aim of making police stations places that people can enter with confidence and receive prompt and efficient services. The initiative also emphasises respect for the dignity of citizens using police facilities.
The clean-up was conducted under the leadership of Kerala Police Housing and Construction Corporation Ltd, or KPHCC, in collaboration with the central public sector enterprise CERO. A committee chaired by the state police chief is overseeing the initiative, with the managing director of KPHCC serving as a member.
The removal of old vehicles and waste also addresses a practical problem inside police compounds, where seized, abandoned or unusable materials can reduce available space and affect the appearance and functioning of public premises. The source report did not provide a separate district-wise list of the stations covered or details of the final disposal and recycling arrangements for the cleared material.
ADGP P Vijayan, law and order, said the drive to remove unusable materials, waste and vehicles from police station premises across Kerala would continue. Further clean-up activity is therefore expected to remain part of the ongoing ‘My Police Station’ project.
