Kerala Braces for Extreme Rainfall as IMD Predicts Widespread Monsoon Intensification across India

Kerala and parts of South Interior Karnataka are expected to witness extremely heavy rainfall on Thursday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which has warned of intensifying monsoon activity across the country. The IMD’s forecast outlines significant precipitation over the next seven days across central, eastern, northeastern, and northwestern India, with heavy rainfall likely in multiple states. This comes as the southwest monsoon continues its northward advance, gradually covering more of the Indian subcontinent and bringing much-needed relief in several regions.

The northern limit of the monsoon has now reached parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, running through cities like Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Jhunjhunu, Bharatpur, Rampur, Sonipat, and Anup Nagar. IMD noted that conditions remain favourable for further progress into the remaining parts of the country within the next three to four days. This broad advance signals the strengthening of the monsoon system, which could result in an active and widespread wet spell through early July.

Besides Kerala and Karnataka, very heavy rainfall is anticipated in Konkan and Goa, the ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra, and parts of Gujarat. Additional affected states will include Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Vidarbha, Tamil Nadu, and Jammu & Kashmir, all expected to receive moderate to heavy showers.

In north India, states such as Uttarakhand, East Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and both eastern and western parts of Madhya Pradesh are likely to witness rainfall of varying intensity. These areas are expected to see peak precipitation activity at different intervals throughout early July.

Delhi and the NCR will see comparatively lighter rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning predicted between June 26 and June 29. Skies are expected to be partly cloudy early in the forecast period, with temperatures between 36°C and 38°C. By June 28 and 29, conditions will shift to generally cloudy with evening and nighttime rainfall, bringing a welcome dip in temperatures ranging between 32°C and 35°C.
