In a bid to preempt potential coastal hazards, authorities in Kanyakumari and adjoining districts have issued a stern warning to residents and visitors alike, highlighting the imminent threat of swell surge in the sea. District Collector P N Sridhar, alongside the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), have cautioned individuals residing or visiting coastal regions to exercise utmost caution in light of the forecasted swell surge on June 10 and 11.
The issuance of this warning comes as a proactive measure to mitigate risks associated with high waves and swell surges, ensuring the safety of coastal communities. SP E Sundaravathanam of Kanyakumari has reiterated the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to sea-related prohibitions and regulations. Individuals found trespassing into restricted sea areas will face legal repercussions, underscoring the severity of the threat posed by the impending swell surge.
Similar advisories have been disseminated by district administrations in Ramanathapuram and Tirunelveli, amplifying awareness and preparedness measures across coastal regions. INCOIS’s warning extends to Tuticorin, with forecasted high waves ranging from 2.3 to 2.6 meters in height and swell waves of 1.5 to 1.8 meters in height, spanning a period of 16 to 19 seconds.
The urgency of these warnings is underscored by recent tragic incidents, wherein eight lives were lost in Kanyakumari district due to swell surge on May 5 and 6. These fatalities serve as sobering reminders of the unpredictable and perilous nature of coastal phenomena, prompting authorities to prioritize preemptive measures to prevent further loss of life.
