The state government has announced the establishment of the Kanpur Region Integrated Development Authority (KRIDA).
This new authority will oversee the coordinated development of Kanpur and its eight neighbouring districts, setting the stage for a transformative phase in regional planning and infrastructure development. KRIDA is envisioned to manage an expansive area covering 20,094 square kilometres, which includes Kanpur city along with Banda, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Jalaun, Auraiya, and Kannauj districts. This broad jurisdiction is designed to foster balanced urbanisation, enhance connectivity, and promote sustainable industrial growth across the region. The Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) has already initiated the process of drafting a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based Master Plan-2051. This forward-looking blueprint aims to guide systematic urban expansion, ensuring that development aligns with environmental sustainability, infrastructure resilience, and improved quality of life for residents.
Officials have emphasised that KRIDA will play a pivotal role in implementing integrated policies focused on ease of living, environmental conservation, and economic development. By leveraging the Uttar Pradesh State Capital Region and Other Area Development Authority Act, 2024, the government aims to promote coordinated urban growth that transcends traditional administrative boundaries. Historically, Kanpur and its surrounding districts have grappled with issues related to unbalanced urbanisation, inadequate infrastructure, and environmental degradation. The introduction of KRIDA is expected to address these challenges by creating a cohesive development framework that integrates urban planning with industrial expansion. A key objective of KRIDA will be to foster eco-friendly and sustainable development practices. This includes prioritising green infrastructure, implementing zero-net carbon emission strategies, and promoting smart city technologies that enhance urban living while minimising environmental impact.
