Jammu Kashmir’s First Cherry Cargo Train to Mumbai Set for June 3

The first-ever cherry cargo train is scheduled to depart from Katra railway station to Bandra in Mumbai on June 3, 2025. This initiative marks a milestone in the region’s agricultural logistics, aiming to enhance the transportation of perishable goods and reduce the reliance on road transport.

The Jammu railway division has received its first VP indent—a formal request for a full parcel van—from Katra to Bandra. This move follows extensive consultations with the Horticulture Department and fruit grower associations, reflecting a concerted effort to streamline the export of cherries and other perishable produce. The cargo train will transport 24 tonnes of cherries, expected to reach Mumbai within 30 hours. This swift transit is anticipated to preserve the quality of the produce, ensuring that it reaches the market in optimal condition. The initiative is poised to alleviate the pressure on road infrastructure, providing a more efficient and sustainable mode of transportation for perishable goods.

Officials highlight that this development will not only benefit the fruit growers by opening new markets but also bolster the local economy. By facilitating quicker and safer delivery of produce, the cargo train service is expected to enhance the competitiveness of Jammu and Kashmir’s horticultural products in national markets. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernize agricultural logistics and promote sustainable practices. The introduction of rail-based transportation for perishable goods is a step towards reducing carbon emissions associated with road freight, contributing to environmental sustainability.

The successful operation of this cherry cargo train could pave the way for similar initiatives involving other perishable commodities, further integrating Jammu and Kashmir’s agricultural sector into national supply chains. As the region continues to develop its infrastructure, such projects are expected to play a crucial role in economic growth and sustainability.
