Indore to Build New STPs and Infrastructure to Improve Waste Management and Traffic

Indore, a rapidly growing city in Madhya Pradesh, is taking significant steps to enhance its waste management infrastructure, with the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) announcing the construction of three new sewage treatment plants (STPs). This move, part of the Namami Gange Project, aims to increase the city’s water cleaning capacity and promote the reuse of treated water. The new plants will be built at Kabitkhedi, Begumkhedi Kanadaiyan, and Laxmibai Tiraha VIP Road, with a combined treatment capacity of 195 MLD (million litres per day).

The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav on Monday, where key infrastructure projects totalling over Rs 450 crore were approved. The STP developments alone will cost Rs 417 crore and are expected to significantly enhance Indore’s capacity to manage its growing waste and water treatment needs. The new plants will be instrumental in improving the city’s environmental sustainability, helping to treat sewage more efficiently and reduce the burden on the existing systems.

Besides the sewage treatment projects, the meeting also approved a range of other initiatives aimed at bolstering Indore’s infrastructure. A major step in enhancing the city’s recreational facilities is the construction of a state-of-the-art sports complex in Nanda Nagar, set to cost Rs 15 crore. This sports facility will cater to various sports activities and provide residents with better recreational opportunities, contributing to the overall well-being of the city’s population. Indore’s traffic management system is also set to get a major upgrade. A new bridge will be constructed between Malwa Mill Square and Patnaipura Square, over a drain, with an investment of Rs 6 crore. This bridge will improve connectivity in the area, streamline traffic flow, and reduce congestion, which has been a growing issue in many parts of the city due to rapid urbanisation.

The city is also focused on improving its water management infrastructure. A new sumpwell will be built at the Bijalpur pumping station at a cost of Rs 18 crore. This project aims to enhance the city’s water distribution capacity and ensure a more reliable supply for its residents. Additionally, the reconstruction of Sulabh complexes, previously removed to make way for development work, will be undertaken using corporate social responsibility (CSR) funds. These complexes are an essential part of the city’s sanitation network and their reconstruction will ensure the city continues to provide accessible sanitation services. The IMC also approved detailed proposals for the construction of new sewage lines and the supervision of the STP projects. These approvals are crucial in keeping the projects on track and ensuring they meet the required environmental and technical standards. Indore’s proactive approach to infrastructure development signals a strong commitment to improving the city’s waste management, water treatment, recreational facilities, and traffic infrastructure. These projects are expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents while supporting the city’s growth and environmental sustainability efforts. The upcoming improvements reflect Indore’s continued focus on modernising its infrastructure to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding population.
