Indore Railway Station Redevelopment to Begin in March, Shifting Maintenance to Laxmibai Nagar
Indore, one of the fastest-growing cities in Madhya Pradesh, is about to witness a major transformation in its railway infrastructure. Western Railway has announced the redevelopment of Indore Railway Station, set to begin in March 2025. This ambitious project, aimed at enhancing passenger amenities and improving operational efficiency, is expected to take the station to the next level, making it a modern, world-class facility for both travellers and railway staff.
The project will see a complete overhaul of Indore Railway Station’s infrastructure, which has long struggled to keep pace with the increasing number of passengers and trains. The redevelopment will focus on improving services and amenities for passengers, including better waiting areas, more platforms, and improved facilities for differently-abled travellers. Western Railway plans to upgrade both the station’s internal layout and external design to cater to modern demands, ensuring a seamless travel experience. One of the notable elements of the redevelopment plan is the shift in maintenance activities. To facilitate the work, all train maintenance functions will be moved to Laxmibai Nagar and Mhow railway stations. These locations will be developed as major coaching depots to manage the additional workload during the renovation period. Ashok Kumar Mishra, General Manager of Western Railway, confirmed the redevelopment will enhance operational efficiency, supporting the growing number of trains at Indore Station. Mishra also provided an update on other key railway projects in the region, including the ongoing Indore-Dahod rail line, which is progressing rapidly, and the resolution of land acquisition issues for the Mhow-Sanawad broad gauge line. The redevelopment plan is part of a broader initiative to modernise railway infrastructure in India, ensuring that stations can meet the needs of an expanding population of passengers. However, not all aspects of the redevelopment plan have been met with enthusiasm. During his visit, Mishra was approached by railway coolies who voiced concerns about how the introduction of e-carts and the relocation of maintenance work would affect their livelihoods. These workers, who have long been a vital part of station operations, fear that automation and outsourcing could reduce their job opportunities. Mishra assured them that their concerns would be addressed and that efforts would be made to ensure a smooth transition without leaving any workers behind. Additionally, members of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee (DRUCC) met with Mishra to discuss passenger-related issues. One major concern raised was the need for better online services, particularly for disabled passengers. The committee suggested that the railway department explore ways to facilitate the process of obtaining railway passes for people with disabilities, making travel more accessible for everyone.
Once completed, the redevelopment of Indore Railway Station will significantly improve the passenger experience.
