Indigenous 5G Radio Opens Orders, Boosting India’s Telecom Stack

WiSig Networks, a Hyderabad-based company incubated at IIT Hyderabad, has opened commercial orders for an indigenous 32TR Massive MIMO radio designed to improve 5G uplink performance and network coverage. The company announced the development at India Mobile Congress 2026 in New Delhi, with bulk shipments planned for 2027.

The radio is designed for 5G networks using the n78 mid-band frequency and supports Class A and Class B uplink performance improvement under the O-RAN Alliance’s 7.2x standard. In Class A operation, received signals are processed within the radio unit. In Class B operation, the processing takes place in the network’s distributed unit.

WiSig said the technology is intended to address limitations faced by earlier Open RAN radios, particularly in locations with weaker network coverage. The device has 32 transmit and 32 receive channels, supports up to 16 spatial layers for downlink and up to eight spatial layers for uplink, and forms part of the company’s complete 5G Standalone solution.

The company said its 5G Standalone solution has been tested for mobile broadband and fixed wireless access. WiSig is demonstrating the radio and the wider solution at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi from October 7 to 10.

The radio was first unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in March 2026. The move to commercial orders marks a shift from technology demonstration towards planned production and deployment, although bulk shipments are not expected until 2027.

Prof. Kiran Kuchi, founder of WiSig Networks and a professor at IIT Hyderabad, said the radio was the result of years of research in massive MIMO and uplink receiver algorithms at IIT Hyderabad and WiSig. He said the research received funding from the IIITB COMET Foundation, supported by the Union Department of Science and Technology’s NM-ICPS mission.

The radio uses Altera Agilex field-programmable gate arrays. Christian Lanzani, general manager for Wireless at Altera, said the company had seen strong operator interest in programmable, uplink-performance-improvement-ready massive MIMO since WiSig unveiled its production MIMO radios with Altera at MWC26.

WiSig said other frequency variants of the radio are under development. The company’s next stated commercial milestone is the planned bulk shipment of the 32TR Massive MIMO radio in 2027.
