The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to become India’s first airport offering water taxi services, enhancing multi-modal connectivity and aiming to alleviate the city’s notorious traffic congestion.
Scheduled to commence operations by April 2025, the airport’s integration of water-based transport is a significant step in redefining commuter experience in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), overseeing the airport’s development, has been directed to ensure the timely completion of all transport connectivity projects, including the water taxi service. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to provide seamless links via road, rail, metro, and waterways, focusing on convenience, accessibility, and robust parking infrastructure.
The planned water taxis will be constructed using Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP), a material known for its strength, lightweight properties, and cost-effectiveness. These taxis are designed for speed and efficiency, offering a quicker alternative route to the airport and aiming to ease road congestion across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
CIDCO has also been instructed to ensure high-quality housing development around the airport, set strict timelines for all infrastructure projects, and deliver affordable housing for citizens in nearby areas. This holistic approach aims to create a sustainable and equitable urban environment, aligning with the broader vision of developing zero net carbon, eco-friendly, and gender-neutral cities.
The introduction of water taxi services at Navi Mumbai International Airport is anticipated to be a game-changer for Mumbai’s traffic woes. By providing an alternative mode of transport, it is expected to transform the way people access the airport and boost regional connectivity. The success of this project may well pave the way for similar models in other metropolitan cities, setting a precedent for integrating innovative transport solutions into urban planning.
As the countdown to India’s most connected and commuter-friendly airport begins, the integration of water taxis signifies a forward-thinking approach to urban mobility, emphasizing sustainability, efficiency, and inclusivity.
