A significant portion of the allocation has been directed towards railway traction upgrades on two high-density routes that serve both freight and passenger traffic. The planned transition from conventional electrification systems to enhanced traction infrastructure is expected to improve power availability for trains operating on these sections. One of the projects targets an important eastern corridor connecting industrial and port-linked regions. The route plays a vital role in transporting minerals and bulk commodities that support manufacturing and export activity. The approved railway traction upgrades also align with India’s wider decarbonisation objectives. Electrified rail transport remains one of the most energy-efficient modes of mass mobility, and improving the performance of electric traction systems can help shift both passenger and freight demand away from more carbon-intensive alternatives such as road transport. Alongside traction improvements, authorities have sanctioned investments aimed at expanding the railway communication network through the installation of additional optical fibre infrastructure. The enhanced digital backbone is expected to support advanced operational technologies, including indigenous train protection systems designed to improve safety and real-time monitoring capabilities.
