The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has identified India as a key player in the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), highlighting the country’s significant potential to reduce carbon emissions amid increasing air travel.
As global air traffic continues to rise, the need for sustainable solutions in aviation has never been more critical. In 2023, the production of SAF globally was approximately 0.5 million tonnes. However, to meet the ambitious targets set for 2050, this figure must increase exponentially, reaching around 500 million tonnes. The IATA underscores that this monumental increase is essential for the aviation industry to achieve net zero carbon emissions by mid-century.
A significant step towards this goal is the establishment of the SAF Registry by IATA, which aims to accelerate the adoption of SAF by providing authoritative accounting and reporting of emissions reductions from its use. This registry is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2025, supported by seventeen airlines, one airline group, six national authorities, three Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and one fuel producer. The Director of Net Zero Transition at IATA emphasised India’s substantial potential in SAF production, given its burgeoning aviation market and expanding airline fleets.
India is among the world’s fastest-growing civil aviation markets, with domestic carriers such as Air India and IndiGo expanding their fleets to meet the surging demand for air travel. The country’s participation in the SAF initiative aligns with its growth trajectory and commitment to sustainable development. IATA’s data reveals that SAF is anticipated to contribute up to 65% of the total carbon mitigation required to achieve net zero emissions in air transportation by 2050. This is a significant proportion, underscoring the critical role that SAF will play in the future of sustainable aviation. The aviation industry’s commitment to this transition is evident, with around 140 SAF projects underway across 31 countries.
India’s involvement in these initiatives is not only a testament to its capabilities but also a crucial step in the global effort to combat climate change. As the country continues to develop its SAF production capabilities, it stands to benefit economically and environmentally, positioning itself as a leader in the sustainable aviation sector.
Representing approximately 330 airlines, which account for over 80% of global traffic, IATA’s endorsement of India’s potential in SAF production highlights the strategic importance of the country in the global aviation landscape. With the establishment of the SAF Registry and the support of international stakeholders, India is well on its way to becoming a pivotal contributor to sustainable aviation fuel production and a model for other nations to follow in the pursuit of greener skies.
