Electric vehicle registrations in India rose 53 per cent year-on-year to a record 2,98,448 units in August 2026, with every major EV category posting its best-ever August performance, according to retail data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The increase lifted overall electric vehicle penetration to 12.3 per cent during the month, up from 9.5 per cent in August 2025, when total EV retail sales stood at 1,95,250 units. The figures were reported by FADA on Tuesday.
Electric two-wheelers accounted for the largest share of August EV sales. Retail volumes in the category rose 67 per cent year-on-year to 1,83,204 units, compared with 1,09,673 units in the same month last year. TVS Motor Company led the segment with 48,938 units, followed by Bajaj Auto with 41,114 units. Bajaj’s sales were more than three times its August 2025 figure of 12,246 units.
Ather Energy recorded sales of 28,757 electric two-wheelers, an increase of about 50 per cent from 19,210 units a year earlier. Hero MotoCorp sold 19,007 units, compared with 13,769 units in August 2025.
Electric passenger vehicle sales rose about 52 per cent year-on-year to 30,696 units from 20,210 units. Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles remained the market leader with 13,158 units, up 63 per cent from 8,064 units in August 2025. Mahindra & Mahindra followed with 6,464 units, a 56 per cent increase from 4,139 units.
JSW MG Motor’s electric passenger vehicle sales declined 17.77 per cent to 4,622 units from 5,621 units a year earlier, but the company retained third place in the segment. VinFast, which entered the Indian market within the past year, ranked fourth with 2,199 units. Maruti Suzuki India recorded 1,412 units for its e Vitara during the month.
Electric three-wheeler sales increased 25.28 per cent to 79,846 units from 63,736 units in August 2025. Electric commercial vehicle sales nearly tripled to 4,702 units from 1,631 units a year earlier, giving the category a 5.18 per cent share, according to FADA.
Sai Giridhar, president of FADA, described electric commercial vehicles as the standout category, saying the August figure was the highest monthly total in the organisation’s series. He said the increase indicated that fleet electrification was moving from pilot projects to purchase orders. Giridhar also said electric two-wheelers accounted for more than 60 per cent of all EV retail sales, while electric three-wheelers had a 65.3 per cent penetration rate.
The August figures cover retail registrations across the four vehicle categories tracked by FADA. The data places electric two-wheelers at the centre of India’s current EV sales growth, while the increase in commercial vehicle registrations marks the category’s strongest monthly performance recorded in the cited series. FADA’s next retail-sales update will provide the subsequent monthly benchmark for the market.
