IMD Weather Forecast Flags Storm Risk in Tamil Nadu as Murasu Weakens

The India Meteorological Department has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and rainfall across several parts of India over the next few days, with Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal facing the most significant weather activity. Delhi is expected to remain partly cloudy without a rainfall warning, while the remnant of Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu has weakened into a depression over east Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh.

The depression was centred at 5.30 am IST on Wednesday over east Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh, near latitude 17.0°N and longitude 80.1°E, according to the IMD forecast cited by the Times of India. It was located around 30 km northwest of Nandigama in Andhra Pradesh, 30 km south of Khammam in Telangana, 80 km northwest of Vijayawada, 90 km east of Nalgonda and 110 km southwest of Bhadrachalam.

The system moved nearly northwards at about 10 kmph during the previous six hours after weakening from a deep depression. The IMD said it was very likely to continue moving nearly northwards and weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area during the following 12 hours.

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning, isolated rainfall and strong winds through November 8. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph. Heavy rainfall has been forecast at isolated places in Tamil Nadu on November 6 and 7.

For Wednesday, heavy rainfall was forecast in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts, while other parts of Tamil Nadu were expected to receive moderate rainfall. The IMD identified parts of western and southern Tamil Nadu, particularly areas adjoining the Western Ghats, as locations where rainfall activity could be more concentrated.

Other southern and central regions may also see unsettled weather. North Interior Karnataka is likely to receive isolated showers, while Rayalaseema may experience rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, occasionally reaching 50 kmph. East and West Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive isolated to scattered rainfall, with gusty winds in some areas.

Goa may receive light rain and isolated thundershowers over the ghats and adjoining areas of North Goa and Kushavati district on November 4 and 5. In Himachal Pradesh, light to moderate rainfall has affected several areas under the influence of a Western Disturbance. Higher-altitude areas of Kinnaur, Shimla and Lahaul-Spiti may receive light snowfall, with isolated rain or snowfall also possible in higher reaches of Chamba and upper Kangra.

Delhi, Punjab and Haryana are expected to remain largely dry. The national capital may see partly cloudy skies over the next few days, and the IMD has not issued a rainfall warning for Delhi. West Bengal is also expected to remain dry, although minimum temperatures may gradually fall by 3-4 degrees Celsius over the next three days.

The IMD forecast indicates that rainfall and thunderstorm activity will continue in parts of southern India, particularly Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, through November 8. The depression over east Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh is expected to weaken further into a well-marked low-pressure area within 12 hours.
