Bengaluru and 22 other districts in Karnataka are bracing for continued heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) extends its yellow alert until May 22.
The alert warns of moderate to heavy thundershowers, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h. The persistent downpour has already led to waterlogging in several low-lying areas of Bengaluru, causing significant traffic disruptions. Authorities, including the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and city traffic police, have activated emergency response plans to manage potential tree falls and ensure smooth traffic flow.
The current weather pattern is attributed to an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal, extending across parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Additionally, a trough from Telangana to North Tamil Nadu is contributing to increased moisture inflow, intensifying rainfall across southern India. Residents are advised to stay cautious, avoid waterlogged routes, and report emergencies to civic helplines. Commuters should plan travel in advance and keep track of traffic advisories.
The IMD has also hinted at favourable conditions for the southwest monsoon to advance further over the southern Arabian Sea, potentially leading to more showers in the coming days.
