Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are among the areas under a heavy rain warning. Assam and Meghalaya may also experience thunderstorms and lightning. The forecast covers isolated locations, meaning conditions may vary significantly within each state.
In southern India, heavy rain is likely in Kerala, Mahe, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Kerala and Mahe may also see thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to experience heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
Parts of Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka and central Maharashtra may also receive thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds. Andhra Pradesh is additionally likely to see strong surface winds at isolated places. East Madhya Pradesh may experience thunderstorms and lightning, while central Maharashtra remains under a forecast for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
The weather warning comes as rainfall is expected to continue across several parts of the country over the next few days. The IMD has forecast heavy rain in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura through Wednesday. Arunachal Pradesh may receive heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday.
In the south, heavy rain is likely to continue over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal through Thursday. Kerala and Mahe may see heavy rain from Wednesday to Saturday, while south interior Karnataka is under a heavy rain forecast through Friday. These conditions can affect road visibility, local traffic movement and the functioning of storm-water drainage in areas that receive intense rainfall over short periods.
Rainfall is also expected over parts of east and central India in the coming days, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, east Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Konkan and Goa and central Maharashtra may receive rain through Sunday, while Gujarat is likely to see rain through Thursday, according to the IMD forecast reported by the Times of India.
