Hyderabad Telangana Plans Climate-Resilient Crop Strategy For Monsoon
Hyderabad is preparing for a climate-sensitive Kharif season as Telangana plans a major shift in cropping patterns amid concerns over possible El Niño-driven weather disruptions. The state government is encouraging farmers to reduce dependence on water-intensive paddy cultivation and adopt crops better suited to uncertain rainfall conditions.
Agriculture and horticulture departments have jointly developed a strategy focused on crop diversification, aiming to protect farm incomes while reducing exposure to climate-related risks. Field-level officials will begin outreach programmes across villages and mandals to guide farmers on crop selection based on local water availability and monsoon forecasts. While rainfall is expected to remain near normal during the early part of the season, experts caution that extended dry spells later in the monsoon could affect crops requiring continuous irrigation. As a result, paddy cultivation is being recommended primarily in areas with assured irrigation infrastructure.
The government is promoting alternatives such as red gram, soybean, groundnut, sesame, sunflower and safflower, along with horticulture crops that require less water and offer stronger market opportunities. Officials believe diversified cropping patterns can improve resilience against weather variability while supporting more sustainable use of water resources. Under the state’s Kharif cultivation plan covering approximately 1.31 crore acres, authorities aim to limit paddy cultivation to around 35 lakh acres, significantly lower than traditional levels. The move reflects a broader effort to align agricultural planning with changing climate conditions and resource availability.
Agricultural economists note that diversification can reduce production risks, improve soil health and strengthen farm profitability by reducing reliance on a single crop. The strategy also aligns with growing concerns about water security across several regions of Telangana. To support the transition, the government is strengthening market linkages and exploring direct farm-to-market channels aimed at improving price realisation for farmers. Enhanced marketing infrastructure is expected to play a key role in encouraging adoption of alternative crops. As climate uncertainty increasingly influences agricultural planning, Telangana’s crop diversification initiative highlights the growing importance of resilient farming practices that balance productivity, water conservation and long-term rural sustainability.
