Hyderabad Saroornagar Lake Faces Growing Weed Menace

Saroornagar Lake in Hyderabad is facing renewed environmental and public health concerns as large quantities of removed water hyacinth remain along parts of its banks. The decaying vegetation has contributed to foul odours and increased mosquito activity, while authorities work to clear the waste and address the sewage inflow believed to be driving recurring weed growth.

Residents and roadside vendors near the lake have reported worsening mosquito activity, particularly during the evening. Large piles of water hyacinth have remained near the lake while clearing operations continue, adding to concerns over sanitation and the condition of the surrounding public space. The accumulation has created a secondary waste-management challenge. As aquatic weeds are removed from a water body, they need to be transported and disposed of quickly. If left beside the lake for extended periods, the vegetation can decompose and release unpleasant odours while creating damp conditions that may support mosquito breeding. LB Nagar zonal commissioner Vikas Mahato said removal operations had been accelerated, with nearly half of the affected lake area reportedly cleared. Officials have also cited logistical difficulties at the Jawaharnagar dumping facility as one reason for delays in transporting the material.

Authorities are using anti-larval measures, manual spraying and drone-based operations to control mosquito breeding around the lake. Fogging is also being carried out to address adult mosquito populations. However, the immediate cleanup addresses only part of the problem. Officials have identified sewage entering Saroornagar Lake as a major reason for the repeated spread of water hyacinth. Nutrient-rich sewage can encourage excessive aquatic plant growth, reducing water quality and placing additional pressure on lake ecosystems. A ₹5.90-crore sewage diversion pipeline has been sanctioned to prevent sewage from entering the lake. The project is expected to redirect the wastewater towards a sewage treatment facility at Priyadarshini Park after its capacity is upgraded to 10 million litres per day.

The proposed intervention is significant because recurring lake restoration can become expensive if the source of pollution remains untreated. Removing vegetation without controlling sewage inflows may result in repeated maintenance requirements and continued ecological stress. The Saroornagar situation also highlights a wider challenge for Hyderabad’s urban lakes. As built-up areas expand around water bodies, untreated wastewater, solid waste and stormwater runoff can place increasing pressure on lake ecosystems. Effective restoration therefore requires both regular maintenance and control of pollution at its source. For nearby communities, the priority remains a clean and accessible lake environment without persistent odour, mosquitoes or waste accumulation. The long-term measure of the restoration effort will be whether sewage diversion and routine maintenance can prevent the hyacinth from returning at the same scale.
