Hyderabad Public Transport Faces IT Corridor Pressure
Hyderabad: Mounting congestion across Hyderabad’s technology corridor is prompting renewed calls for stronger public transport and improved last-mile connectivity, as thousands of daily commuters continue to spend longer hours on overcrowded roads despite existing metro and bus services. Urban mobility experts say addressing these gaps is becoming critical for sustaining economic productivity and ensuring the city’s continued growth.
The city’s western IT belt, which includes major employment hubs such as Hitec City, Gachibowli, Financial District and Nanakramguda, has experienced rapid commercial and residential expansion over the past decade. However, transport infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with rising commuter volumes. Peak-hour traffic, particularly during the monsoon season, has become a persistent challenge, increasing travel times and affecting employee productivity. Many commuters believe stronger last mile connectivity would encourage a shift away from private vehicles. While Hyderabad’s Metro network serves key business districts, access between stations and office campuses remains inconsistent, forcing many employees to depend on cabs, two-wheelers or personal cars for the final stretch of their journeys. Transport planners note that company-operated cabs continue to dominate employee mobility because they offer flexibility, although they also contribute to the growing number of vehicles on already congested roads. Experts argue that expanding shared shuttle services and integrating them more effectively with metro stations could reduce traffic volumes while lowering emissions across the corridor.
Existing initiatives such as dedicated shuttle services connecting Metro stations with technology parks demonstrate the potential of organised shared mobility. These services have primarily focused on improving last mile connectivity and enhancing commuter safety, particularly for women travelling during early morning or late evening hours. Urban mobility specialists believe similar models could be expanded to cover more employment clusters and educational institutions. The state transport corporation already operates an extensive bus network serving the IT corridor through multiple routes and high-frequency services during office hours. These services are linked with Metro stations, MMTS rail services and airport connectivity. However, mobility experts say passenger demand has grown faster than network capacity, particularly during morning and evening peaks, creating overcrowding on both buses and metro trains.
Urban planning professionals argue that solving Hyderabad’s traffic challenge requires an integrated mobility strategy rather than isolated transport projects. Alongside increasing bus frequency, they recommend dedicated bus lanes, coordinated ticketing systems, better pedestrian infrastructure and safer cycling routes to improve access to workplaces. Such measures could encourage greater use of sustainable transport while reducing dependence on private vehicles. As Hyderabad continues to attract investment in the technology sector, efficient commuter mobility is emerging as an important economic priority. Strengthening last mile connectivity, expanding public transport capacity and improving coordination between government agencies, employers and transport operators will be essential to building a more resilient, inclusive and climate-conscious urban transport system capable of supporting future growth.
