Hyderabad Maps Long Term Drinking Water Strategy

Hyderabad’s water utility is preparing a long-term strategy to strengthen drinking water infrastructure as the metropolitan region expands and demand continues to rise. The initiative aims to improve supply reliability, enhance network resilience and ensure growing urban areas are adequately served before the next peak summer season.

The proposed plan comes as authorities prepare to extend the operational jurisdiction of the city’s water utility across the wider Core Urban Region. Officials have been instructed to develop a scientific framework that assesses future demand while identifying infrastructure upgrades needed to support the city’s expanding population and economic growth. The Hyderabad water infrastructure plan includes strengthening reservoirs, transmission pipelines, pumping stations, valves and distribution junctions before additional water sources become operational over the next two years. New supply is expected through ongoing projects connected to the Godavari system and the Osman Sagar–Sheikpet network, requiring supporting infrastructure to be completed in advance. Senior officials have also been directed to identify neighbourhoods that experienced acute shortages during last summer and prepare targeted interventions before the onset of the next dry season. Particular attention is expected to be given to recently urbanised areas, including parts of Malkajgiri, where rapid residential growth has increased pressure on existing water networks.

Urban planners say proactive investment in Hyderabad water infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as the metropolitan area continues to expand beyond its traditional limits. While new water sources improve supply capacity, parallel investment in distribution systems is essential to minimise transmission losses, improve operational efficiency and ensure equitable access across developing suburbs. Authorities are also planning dedicated filling stations for high-capacity water tankers alongside faster loading systems to improve emergency water distribution. Tanker services continue to play an important role in supporting neighbourhoods facing temporary shortages, particularly during periods of high demand or delayed rainfall. With current storage levels at one of the city’s major reservoirs reported to be limited, officials have also been asked to prepare contingency measures that can maintain uninterrupted supply should monsoon inflows remain below expectations. Water management specialists note that climate variability is making contingency planning an increasingly critical component of urban water governance.

In addition to physical infrastructure, the utility intends to strengthen operational oversight through improved monitoring of online tanker bookings, dispatch systems and service records. Better digital management is expected to improve transparency, optimise resource allocation and reduce service disruptions. As Hyderabad continues its rapid urban expansion, experts believe integrated water planning will be essential to balancing population growth, climate resilience and sustainable resource management. Timely implementation of the proposed measures could strengthen the city’s preparedness for future demand while supporting more reliable and inclusive urban water services.
