The findings reinforce the need to treat urban water bodies as critical infrastructure rather than vacant land for future development.

The Hyderabad lake conservation debate has gained urgency as scientific studies increasingly link disappearing wetlands to rising temperatures, declining water security and growing climate vulnerability. Experts say lakes play a vital role in regulating local temperatures through evaporation and vegetation, creating cooler microclimates that reduce heat stress in densely built neighbourhoods. Historical records show that Hyderabad’s urban landscape was originally designed around an interconnected system of tanks and reservoirs that captured seasonal rainfall, controlled floods and replenished groundwater. Urban development experts advocate integrating wetlands into master plans as protected public infrastructure with legal safeguards comparable to roads, drainage systems and water supply assets. They also recommend coordinated governance across civic agencies, regular desilting, sewage diversion, ecological restoration and community participation to improve long-term management outcomes. As Hyderabad continues to expand economically and demographically, balancing development with ecological resilience is expected to become central to future planning. Strengthening lake restoration, conserving urban wetlands and embedding nature-based infrastructure into city growth strategies could help improve water security, reduce climate risks and create a healthier urban environment for future generations.
