Hyderabad Kukatpally Drain Works Get Deadline

GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan has directed civic officials to expedite stormwater drain works in the Kukatpally zone, especially in areas where land acquisition is not a barrier.

During a site inspection on Tuesday, the commissioner visited ongoing development projects in Moosapet, Gajularamaram, and Kukatpally circles, stressing that flood mitigation must be prioritised before the rains begin. He took stock of the water stagnation hotspot near Moosapet Metro Station and assessed progress on the box drain works between IDPL Cheruvu Surplus Nala and RTC Depot, a project funded by the Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP). While officials cited land acquisition challenges for delays, the commissioner instructed teams to prioritise stretches without such issues. At Kaithalapur, road-widening works remain stalled due to court litigation. Karnan asked the zonal commissioner to find a prompt resolution to avoid prolonged disruptions. In response to frequent flooding near the Ambedkar Nagar court premises, GHMC officials proposed laying a 90 mm diameter drainage pipeline. Karnan directed them to work closely with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) to implement the solution swiftly.

The inspection also extended to the Kailashavar Graveyard and nearby Animal Care Centre, where the commissioner was briefed on post-operative marking methods for sterilised stray dogs. He was informed that ear-notching is currently being practised. As part of broader civic improvement, RV Karnan recommended creating a free left-turn corridor towards JNTU to ease traffic flow. Later, he reviewed the status of the TSII multi-purpose function hall in Shapur, where the cooking and dining halls have reached structural completion. He advised officials to use Shabad stone flooring in kitchen and dining areas for better durability. The commissioner also visited Suraram to examine persistent water stagnation issues and inspected the ongoing development of a sports complex in Gajularamaram. He recommended that volleyball courts be added to complement the existing cricket and badminton facilities. His final stop was at the Urban Forest Park, where he reviewed environmental initiatives underway in the zone.

With Hyderabad prone to seasonal flooding, the GHMC’s latest push underlines the urgency of completing stormwater infrastructure and easing bottlenecks in civic amenities. As the city braces for the monsoon, officials have been tasked with ensuring water does not stagnate in low-lying and high-traffic areas.
