Hyderabad KBR Park Traffic Shifts During H CITI Works
Hyderabad’s KBR Park corridor has entered a new phase of traffic management as authorities monitor a one-way system introduced amid major flyover and underpass construction. The arrangement, which began on August 18, is intended to keep vehicles moving through a corridor where construction has reduced available road space. Its early performance highlights the challenge of maintaining everyday mobility while transforming a major urban junction network.
Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar inspected the revised traffic arrangement on August 20, travelling through several junctions around KBR Park to assess conditions on the ground. He also interacted with traffic personnel stationed at key points, including Jubilee Checkpost, Film Nagar, Agrasen Junction and the park entrance. The inspection came after a difficult first day for commuters. Traffic slowed at several locations following the introduction of the one-way loop, with lane changes and limited public awareness contributing to delays. Police had earlier deployed extensive personnel and monitoring systems, including CCTV and drones, to track movement and identify locations requiring adjustments. The wider issue is linked to the H-CITI infrastructure programme, which is being implemented to improve traffic movement around some of Hyderabad’s busiest junctions. The project includes seven flyovers and seven underpasses across six major junctions around the KBR Park corridor and is being executed in two phases. The reported project cost is around ₹1,090 crore.
For residents and daily commuters, however, the immediate impact is measured less by the eventual infrastructure than by journey times, road safety and predictability. Construction-related restrictions can create additional pressure on surrounding neighbourhoods if diversion routes are not clearly understood or if junction capacity varies sharply along the corridor. The traffic changes also have an environmental dimension. Longer idling periods and repeated acceleration can increase fuel consumption and local emissions. A temporary system that keeps vehicles moving more consistently could therefore deliver benefits beyond travel time, provided it does not simply shift congestion to adjoining residential streets.
The authorities have indicated that the arrangement will be closely monitored and that motorists should follow lane markings, directional signs and traffic instructions. Earlier trials were conducted before implementation, while real-time monitoring is being used to identify operational problems. The larger test will be whether the temporary traffic strategy can balance construction requirements with the needs of residents, pedestrians, public transport users and motorists. As Hyderabad expands, infrastructure projects will increasingly need to account for construction-stage mobility as carefully as the final road design. The KBR Park corridor could provide an important test of that approach.
