Hyderabad Implements Comprehensive Safety Measures for Monsoon Season

HYDERABAD: In anticipation of the monsoon season, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) have collaborated to implement rigorous safety measures aimed at enhancing the city’s infrastructure resilience and ensuring public safety.

As part of a proactive approach to mitigate potential risks associated with heavy rainfall, all manholes across Hyderabad will be equipped with protective grills, with those situated on arterial roads prominently painted red for heightened visibility. Additionally, manholes identified as hazardous or prone to waterlogging will be marked with red flags as an added precautionary measure.

With a vast sewage network spanning thousands of kilometers, encompassing both GHMC and municipal areas, the authorities have recognized the need for robust safety protocols to safeguard workers and residents alike. Approximately 6.35 lakh manholes, including a significant proportion categorized as deep manholes, are subject to these safety enhancements, reflecting a comprehensive approach to infrastructure management.

Speaking on the city’s preparedness, an official from HMWS&SB emphasized the completion of the manhole grilling initiative, urging residents to report any instances of damaged or unauthorized access to manholes for immediate rectification. Furthermore, he underscored the importance of maintaining drinking water quality and efficient sewage management, emphasizing swift resolution of complaints within a 30-minute timeframe. In addition to proactive measures, the monsoon action plan entails continuous monitoring of waterlogging points, routine cleanup activities, and provision of protective equipment for field staff. Specialized teams, including the Central Safety Protocol Cell and Emergency Response Team, have been mobilized to oversee safety audits, monitor compliance with safety measures, and facilitate swift response in crisis situations.

The Safety Protocol Team, tasked with ensuring adherence to safety regulations across various worksites, conducts thorough inspections and implements necessary safety measures, including the installation of signage and geo-tagging of infrastructure. With a concerted effort to prioritize safety and resilience, Hyderabad authorities are poised to navigate the challenges of the monsoon season effectively, underscoring the significance of proactive planning and collaborative initiatives in ensuring the well-being of residents and the city’s infrastructure integrity.
