Hyderabad: A major traffic management plan will take effect across Hyderabad’s western IT corridor from July 1 as authorities begin the next construction phase of a multi-level flyover and underpass at IIIT Junction. The temporary restrictions, expected to remain for around three months, are likely to affect thousands of daily commuters while supporting a larger infrastructure project aimed at improving long-term mobility in one of the city’s busiest employment hubs.
The traffic diversions at IIIT Junction will alter vehicle movement along key stretches connecting DLF, Gachibowli, Lingampally and surrounding commercial districts. Officials have advised motorists to prepare for extended travel times and adopt alternate routes during the construction period, particularly during office peak hours. According to traffic authorities, access beyond DLF Gate No. 1 towards IIIT Junction will remain restricted for regular traffic while construction activities continue. Vehicles travelling from the Radisson Junction side will be redirected through Gachibowli Junction and adjoining roads before reaching IIIT Junction. Similarly, motorists approaching from Lingampally towards DLF Road will be diverted through an alternative route passing Gachibowli Junction and Radisson Junction. Despite the restrictions, access to major corporate campuses through designated entry points will continue, reducing disruption for employees working in the area. However, transport planners expect increased congestion on neighbouring arterial roads as traffic redistributes across the surrounding network.
The traffic diversions at IIIT Junction highlight the growing challenge of upgrading infrastructure within rapidly expanding technology districts. Hyderabad’s western corridor has experienced sustained commercial and residential growth over the past decade, leading to higher vehicle volumes and increasing pressure on existing road infrastructure. They suggest that infrastructure upgrades should be accompanied by stronger public transport connectivity, safer pedestrian facilities and improved cycling infrastructure to reduce dependence on private vehicles. Businesses operating across the IT corridor may also experience indirect impacts as longer travel times affect employee commutes, logistics schedules and service deliveries. Flexible work arrangements and staggered office timings could help ease peak-hour congestion while construction progresses. Authorities have indicated that sections of the affected roads may reopen in phases depending on construction progress and available working space. While the broader flyover project is expected to continue for several more months, transport officials will monitor traffic conditions and make operational adjustments where necessary to maintain smoother movement across the corridor.
