Hyderabad: Sustainable practices are gaining greater attention in the city’s hospitality sector, with Novotel Hyderabad Airport renewing its Green Key certification for a third consecutive year. The recognition highlights efforts to reduce resource consumption and improve environmental performance at a property located within the GMR Aerocity development.
The Green Key programme assesses hospitality establishments against environmental criteria covering areas such as energy efficiency, water management, waste reduction and responsible operations. The certification provides a framework for hotels to measure and improve their environmental practices rather than treating sustainability as a one-time initiative. At the Hyderabad property, sustainability measures include rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment and energy-efficient systems. The hotel has also installed electric-vehicle charging infrastructure, reflecting the growing connection between hospitality operations and the wider shift towards cleaner mobility. Water management is another area of focus. Wastewater treatment allows water to be processed for reuse, while measures within laundry operations are intended to reduce consumption. These interventions are particularly relevant in Hyderabad, where rapid urbanisation and periodic water stress have increased the importance of efficient resource management.
The property also maintains an on-site green area for growing herbs and leafy produce. Food-waste reduction forms part of its broader operational approach, potentially helping reduce the amount of organic waste sent for disposal while improving resource efficiency within food and beverage operations.
