Hyderabad Faces Major Supply Disruption As Key Pumps Shut Down
Hyderabad faced an unexpected interruption to its municipal water network on Wednesday after a night of strong winds triggered power failures that shut down multiple pumping stations drawing water from the Manjeera system. The disruption affected several neighbourhoods across the city’s north-western corridor, raising concerns about the vulnerability of essential urban services to increasingly volatile weather patterns. Officials said restoration work is underway, but urged residents in impacted zones to conserve water until supply stabilises.
According to senior municipal officials, the storm led to trees collapsing on transmission lines, causing multiple tripping points across the electricity network. These outages brought operations to a standstill at the Kalablur, Rajampet and Patancheru installations—three key pumping stations that channel Manjeera water to some of Hyderabad’s fastest-growing residential and commercial clusters. The disruption occurred around midnight, abruptly stopping inflow to feeder lines that support both domestic supply and bulk connections. Large parts of the western suburbs and inner-city areas—stretching from RC Puram, Lingampalli and Chandanagar to Miyapur, Erragadda, S.R. Nagar, Ameerpet and Kukatpally—reported low pressure or complete outages through early Wednesday. Officials said additional localities connected to intermediate off-take points also experienced interruptions, a cascading impact often seen when trunk-line pumping systems halt unexpectedly.
Power utility teams have been deployed to attend to the damaged points, and municipal engineers remained stationed at the pumping stations through the night to restart operations as soon as electricity supply stabilises. A senior official involved in the response said the incident underscores the need for greater resilience planning, including stronger backup power infrastructure and predictive maintenance systems, to prevent essential services from being disrupted by seasonal storms. Hyderabad’s dependence on long-distance water transmission makes such episodes particularly consequential. As the city expands further westward, demand for treated surface water has grown sharply, putting pressure on the Manjeera and Godavari systems that already operate near capacity. Urban planners note that stronger climate-linked wind events, combined with ageing electrical infrastructure, can intensify stress on water supply chains unless coordinated upgrades are prioritised.
Senior administrators from the water board monitored the response on Wednesday morning and directed teams to expedite restoration in coordination with power utility officials. Authorities also appealed to residents to use drinking water judiciously until pumping operations return to normal levels. The incident is likely to revive discussions on Hyderabad’s water security strategy—particularly the need for diversified sources, decentralised storage, and more robust emergency continuity mechanisms. While the immediate outage is expected to be resolved within hours of full power restoration, experts say the event highlights how climate disruptions can ripple through urban infrastructures that are already under strain. Ensuring uninterrupted supply in the face of changing weather patterns, they argue, will require long-term planning that strengthens the resilience of both water and energy systems.
