Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has initiated work on 18 new link roads across key growth corridors of the city, aiming to improve connectivity, reduce traffic congestion and support future urban expansion.
The latest phase of the programme covers stretches in Shamshabad, Rajendranagar and Khairatabad, areas that have witnessed rapid residential and commercial development in recent years. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen Hyderabad’s secondary road network and reduce pressure on major arterial routes. Unlike large highway projects, link roads are designed to connect existing major roads, creating alternative travel routes and improving local mobility. Urban transport experts note that such interventions often deliver significant congestion relief by distributing traffic more efficiently across the network. A substantial portion of the new works is concentrated in the southern and southwestern growth corridors, where expanding residential communities, logistics facilities and commercial developments have increased traffic volumes. Several planned stretches will improve connectivity between residential neighbourhoods, Outer Ring Road access points and emerging economic zones.
The longest proposed corridor is located in the Shamshabad region, linking key transport routes and improving access to rapidly urbanising areas near Hyderabad’s southern gateway. Additional road connections are expected to strengthen mobility around Rajendranagar and adjoining localities, where population growth and real estate activity have intensified over the past decade. Urban planners view the programme as an important component of integrated city development. Improved connectivity can reduce travel times, enhance access to employment centres and support more balanced urban growth. It can also encourage development away from already congested central areas by improving accessibility in peripheral zones. Previous phases of the link road initiative have demonstrated wider economic impacts beyond traffic management. Improved road access has supported new residential projects, commercial activity and land value appreciation in several locations, contributing to the expansion of Hyderabad’s urban footprint.
However, experts caution that road infrastructure alone cannot resolve long-term mobility challenges. They argue that investments in public transport, pedestrian infrastructure and land-use planning must accompany road expansion to ensure sustainable urban development. Officials have indicated that construction has commenced where land is readily available, while acquisition and right-of-way processes continue in other locations. The phased implementation is expected to minimise disruption while accelerating project delivery. As Hyderabad continues to grow outward, secondary transport infrastructure such as link roads is becoming increasingly important. The success of the initiative will depend on how effectively it integrates with broader mobility, housing and urban planning strategies aimed at creating a more connected and resilient metropolitan region.
