Hyderabad Elevated Corridors Gain Pace as Pillars Rise in Secunderabad

Construction on two elevated corridors in Secunderabad Cantonment is advancing, with pillar work progressing along National Highway-44 and demolition and excavation beginning at selected locations on State Highway-1, according to officials from the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).

The first project covers a 5.4-kilometre stretch from Paradise Circle to Dairy Farm Road on NH-44. HMDA has been constructing pillars on the initial section between Paradise Circle or Balamrai Junction and the area near the Babu Jagjivan Ram statue behind Begumpet Airport. Of the 20 structural pillars planned for this section, most have been structurally completed, an HMDA official told Telangana Today.

The project is also moving into the next phase, with large precast concrete segments, or girders, being cast at designated yards. These segments will be launched onto completed pier caps as the elevated structure takes shape. At Paradise Circle, civil works have been completed following utility shifting, road widening and the construction of peripheral compound walls.

A senior HMDA engineer said the progress of pillar construction marked the completion of the most disruptive phase of surface-level construction at one of Secunderabad’s busiest traffic intersections. The report did not specify the total project cost or a final date for opening the corridor.

The NH-44 corridor also includes a planned underground tunnel segment beneath the Begumpet Airport runway. HMDA is currently focused on securing final clearances from the Airports Authority of India for this part of the project. Until those approvals are obtained, the tunnel component remains subject to the required aviation-related clearance process.

Work on the second elevated corridor, planned between Gymkhana Grounds and the Shamirpet Outer Ring Road on State Highway-1, also known as Rajiv Rahadari, has accelerated. HMDA has started property demolition and earth excavation at locations where there are no disputes, officials said.

At Gymkhana Grounds, the peripheral compound wall has been completed. HMDA has also completed peripheral walls at defence establishments along the route after receiving clearance from the Ministry of Defence. The update indicates that work on the SH-1 corridor is proceeding in parallel with the NH-44 project, although the extent of construction completed across the full alignment was not provided.

Both corridors are being developed to address traffic congestion and improve connectivity through Secunderabad Cantonment. Their construction involves coordination across road works, utilities, defence land, private properties and aviation-related clearances. The next key milestone for the NH-44 project is the completion of remaining structural works and the launch of precast girders, while the tunnel segment remains dependent on final AAI clearances.
