Bengaluru’s Hebbal flyover, a vital link for commuters travelling from Kempegowda International Airport to the city, will experience a late-night traffic ban from May 17 to May 21, 2025.
This temporary closure is due to ongoing infrastructure development by the Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA), which is constructing additional ramps to enhance traffic flow. The BDA has scheduled the installation of seven steel girders, each 33.5 metres in length, across the railway tracks during the specified period. To facilitate this work, the flyover section from Esteem Mall towards Mekhri Circle will be closed nightly from 12:00 AM to 3:00 AM. Consequently, all vehicles travelling from the airport side towards the city will be diverted to alternative routes during these hours.
Commuters heading towards Mekhri Circle are advised to exit the flyover at Esteem Mall, take a right turn at Hebbal Circle onto the Outer Ring Road, proceed towards Tumkur Road, take a left turn at Kuvempu Circle, and continue to Mekhri Circle via New BEL Road. This diversion aims to minimise disruptions and ensure safety during the construction activities. The Hebbal flyover has been undergoing significant modifications as part of the BDA’s efforts to alleviate traffic congestion. The expansion project includes the addition of two new lanes and the reconstruction of the KR Puram loop to facilitate smoother traffic movement towards Mekhri Circle. These upgrades are expected to improve connectivity and reduce bottlenecks in the area.
However, the ongoing construction has led to increased traffic snarls, particularly during peak hours, as vehicles from Nagawara, Tumkur Road, and the Outer Ring Road service road converge under the flyover. Motorists have reported delays of up to 30 minutes while navigating this stretch. To mitigate these issues, the Bengaluru Traffic Police have advised airport-bound travellers to plan their journeys accordingly. Given the anticipated delays, commuters are encouraged to leave at least two hours ahead of their scheduled flights to ensure timely arrival at the airport.
The BDA’s efforts to enhance the Hebbal flyover are part of a broader initiative to improve Bengaluru’s infrastructure. In addition to the flyover expansion, plans are underway for a dedicated elevated flyover connecting Hebbal Junction to Kempegowda International Airport. This proposed 35-kilometre corridor aims to provide seamless connectivity, reducing travel time and alleviating traffic congestion along the route. While these developments are expected to significantly improve traffic conditions in the long term, commuters are advised to stay informed about ongoing construction activities and plan their routes accordingly. The BDA and Bengaluru Traffic Police continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary to ensure the safety and convenience of all road users.
