Tamil Nadu’s Theni and Coimbatore districts are expected to receive heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, while several other parts of the state may see light to moderate showers, the Chennai Meteorological Centre said in its latest forecast.
The weather office attributed the conditions to atmospheric circulation over the southern coastal parts of Tamil Nadu, along with another circulation over Lakshadweep and Karnataka. The forecast covers the current day and says thunderstorms may occur in several parts of the state.
Chennai and its suburban areas are expected to remain generally cloudy, with some locations likely to receive light or moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. The forecast did not indicate that Chennai would receive the same level of heavy rain expected in Theni and Coimbatore.
The advisory comes after a severe cyclonic storm over the central-western Bay of Bengal moved north and north-west before crossing the Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narasapur in the early hours of the previous day. The storm is now gradually weakening, according to the weather report.
Rainfall has already been recorded in parts of Tamil Nadu. Cuddalore received 9 centimetres of rain in the 24-hour period ending the previous morning, the Chennai Meteorological Centre said. The report did not provide district-wise rainfall forecasts beyond the locations identified for heavy rain.
The conditions are relevant to local transport and public infrastructure because thunderstorms and intense rainfall can affect road visibility, surface drainage, electricity networks and movement in built-up areas. The forecast, however, did not announce any closure of schools, roads, public offices or transport services, and no specific disruption was reported in the supplied advisory.
The weather office said rain could continue in some Tamil Nadu districts over the next five days. A separate forecast for November 8, which the report identifies as Deepavali, lists Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul and Kanniyakumari as districts where heavy rain is possible.
The forecast places both current and upcoming rain risks across districts with urban centres, agricultural areas and coastal settlements. The immediate alert remains focused on Theni and Coimbatore, where residents may experience heavy showers, thunder and lightning during the forecast period. The Chennai Meteorological Centre’s next updates will determine whether the warning is extended, narrowed or accompanied by additional public safety instructions.
