HYDERABAD: Telangana grapples with a significant rise in heat stroke cases as the state reels under the scorching heatwave, witnessing a threefold increase compared to the previous summer.
According to data compiled by the Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI), the state recorded a staggering 231 heat stroke cases in April alone, marking a stark contrast to the 65 cases reported during the same period last year. The surge in cases continued into May, with 253 cases reported between May 1 and May 20, representing a twofold increase from the 117 cases recorded in May 2023.
The unprecedented severity of this year’s heatwave has exacerbated the health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Telangana experienced temperatures soaring above 46 degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest summers in recent memory. Despite precautionary alerts issued by the authorities, many individuals, particularly those without access to shelter or cooling facilities, remained vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke.
Throughout mid-April to the first week of May, nearly the entire state witnessed temperatures surpassing 42 degrees Celsius, with certain regions such as Ramagundam and Hyderabad nearing their historical temperature records. Ramagundam recorded a scorching high of 47.2 degrees Celsius, while Hyderabad touched 44.2 degrees Celsius, underscoring the intensity of the heatwave.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red and orange alerts, advising residents to take precautionary measures such as staying indoors, staying hydrated, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Despite these warnings, individuals engaged in outdoor labour or activities remained particularly susceptible to heat-related ailments.
Districts bearing the brunt of the heatwave include Adilabad, Karimnagar, Bhupalpally, Nizamabad, Suryapet, Hanumakonda, Mahabubabad, Nalgonda, and Asifabad, where temperatures consistently exceeded 46 degrees Celsius for extended periods. The alarming surge in heat stroke cases underscores the urgent need for enhanced public awareness campaigns, infrastructure improvements, and proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of heatwaves on public health. As Telangana navigates through this unprecedented heatwave, concerted efforts from both governmental and non-governmental entities are essential to safeguarding the well-being of its residents and minimising the impact of extreme weather events on vulnerable populations.
