Haryana Pushes Organic Farming With New Alliance

The state government has aligned with the Union Ministry of Cooperation to accelerate the organic farming ecosystem. The collaboration is set to enhance market access and income opportunities for thousands of farmers shifting to eco-friendly agricultural practices.

At the core of this initiative is a strategic partnership forged during a high-level meeting between the Union Minister of State for Cooperation and Haryana’s Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare. The focus: ensuring Haryana’s organic cultivators receive fair prices while positioning their produce in premium national and global markets through the “Bharat Organics” brand.

The state’s Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department has committed full institutional backing to the National Cooperative Organics Limited (NCOL), the cooperative arm championing India’s organic transition under the aegis of the Ministry of Cooperation. This move marks a significant policy pivot—from treating organic farming as a niche practice to mainstreaming it through cooperative-led scalability and branding support.

This initiative, aligned with the Union government’s broader vision of “Prosperity through Cooperation,” underscores a shift in agricultural policy toward sustainability, traceability, and farmer equity. With demand for organic produce rising steadily among health-conscious consumers, Haryana’s entry into the formal organic economy comes at a timely juncture. India currently ranks among the top ten countries in terms of organic agricultural land, yet market penetration remains low due to fragmented supply chains and lack of farmer awareness.

The partnership is designed to tackle these bottlenecks through a structured value chain—connecting Haryana’s farmers directly to consumer markets under a unified national identity. “Bharat Organics” is positioned as both a marketing platform and a quality assurance framework, which will help standardise production and certification while enhancing brand recognition.Officials indicated that the upcoming roadmap includes training modules, certification support, logistical facilitation, and inclusion of women and marginal farmers—key to achieving equitable outcomes and gender-neutral growth in the agri-sector. Moreover, this cooperation-based model emphasises decentralisation and local empowerment, both critical to sustaining rural economies in the face of climate change and urban migration.

As policy frameworks shift to accommodate net-zero goals, organic farming offers a compelling alternative—reducing reliance on chemical fertilisers, enhancing soil health, and curbing water use. Haryana’s move is therefore not just about market access but also about climate resilience and circular economy integration in agriculture.Senior officials from both the state and central governments participated in the meeting, signalling robust administrative support. While implementation challenges remain—from scaling infrastructure to onboarding smallholders—the political consensus around this vision could serve as a catalyst for a broader green agricultural movement in India.

Whether this new alliance delivers on its promise will depend on how quickly it translates policy into grassroots impact. For now, Haryana’s organic farmers are looking at a future where sustainability might finally become profitable.
