Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a two-phase permanent housing plan for families living in slums in Haiderpur, in the Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency, with the tender process for the first phase already under way.
The announcement was made during a free mega health camp at the Ayurvedic Hospital in Haiderpur under the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’. Gupta also interacted with residents during the programme and outlined the government’s proposed housing and civic improvement work in the area.
The first phase will cover slum settlements in the AU Block and AO Block areas. According to the chief minister, the tender process for housing construction has started, while sites around these settlements have been identified. Construction is expected to begin after the related process is completed.
The second phase will cover slum settlements near the Ayurvedic Hospital area. The government is currently looking for land around the hospital for this phase, according to the announcement. No construction timeline or details on the number, design or allotment process for the proposed homes were provided in the report.
Gupta said the government’s objective was not to remove residents. She said no slum in the area would be demolished for development work and described the plan as an effort to improve living conditions rather than displace families. The announcement did not specify the legal or administrative framework under which residents would receive the permanent homes.
Alongside the housing plan, the government said several basic services were being developed or provided in Haiderpur. These include new toilets, water ATMs, an Atal canteen, a new sewer line, water pipelines and streetlights. The announcement linked the housing programme with broader improvements in sanitation, water supply, drainage and neighbourhood infrastructure.
The health camp launched at the Ayurvedic Hospital offered medical examinations and consultations at one location. Gupta said the government wanted health services to reach residents closer to where they live instead of requiring them to travel between facilities.
Other projects mentioned during the programme include a school serving classes up to Class 12, for which around 5,000 square yards of land has reportedly been made available. A tender has also been issued for a new community building. Construction of a Chhath ghat is under way along the local canal, while a new Ayushman Arogya Mandir has been opened in Haiderpur.
The chief minister also said an integrated health facility called ‘Nirog Dham’ would be developed in the area, bringing together Ayurvedic and allopathic services. The announcement did not provide a completion date for the facility or the other civic projects. The immediate housing milestone is the progress of the first-phase tender process for the AU and AO Block settlements.
