Gurugram traffic police have impounded a Honda Shine motorcycle after finding 113 pending challans carrying a total penalty of about Rs 10.68 lakh during a routine checking drive at MDI Chowk. The action was taken after the rider could not produce any vehicle documents when stopped by officers.
According to traffic police officials cited in the report, checking was under way at several locations across Gurugram on Wednesday. Assistant Sub-Inspector Praveen Kumar, identified as the zonal officer deployed at MDI Chowk, stopped the motorcycle and asked the person riding it to show the relevant papers. The rider was unable to provide any documents, following which the vehicle was checked through the traffic enforcement system.
The subsequent verification showed that 113 challans had been issued against the motorcycle under different provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The accumulated penalty was approximately Rs 10.68 lakh, prompting the department to seize the vehicle and place it in the designated seizure yard. The report identifies the motorcycle as a Honda Shine and says it did not have a registration number displayed on it.
A senior traffic police officer said most of the pending challans related to riding without a helmet, not having a valid pollution certificate, absence of insurance and other traffic violations. The officer said the enforcement action followed the discovery of the outstanding cases during the document check.
The seizure forms part of a Gurugram traffic police campaign targeting vehicle owners who have not paid outstanding challans for more than 90 days. The campaign is focused on vehicles with long-pending penalties, rather than only on violations detected during the latest checking exercise. In this case, the number of unpaid challans and the total amount due led to the motorcycle being taken into custody.
Traffic police officials have appealed to motorists to follow road rules, keep mandatory vehicle documents updated and pay challans within the prescribed time. The department has not disclosed in the report how the outstanding penalties will be recovered or what further legal process will apply to the seized motorcycle.
