Gurugram Streetlight Network Set For Major Upgrade
Gurugram is preparing for a major administrative shift in its urban infrastructure management, with the metropolitan authority moving to take control of streetlight operations across several developing sectors. The transition is expected to improve monitoring, maintenance response and energy management on key master roads, affecting thousands of daily commuters, residents and businesses across the expanding city.
The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has initiated the process of bringing streetlight maintenance under its jurisdiction from the Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) for sectors beyond the city’s older urban areas. The move covers important growth corridors, including parts of the Golf Course Extension Road, Southern Peripheral Road and multiple newly developed sectors. At present, streetlight responsibilities are divided between different civic agencies, creating challenges in coordination, complaint resolution and long-term infrastructure planning. Urban planners suggest that consolidating control under a single authority could help establish clearer accountability for one of the city’s most visible public services. As part of the transition, officials are working on a detailed transfer process involving inspection of existing infrastructure, mapping of streetlight assets and review of maintenance agreements. The exercise is expected to create a digital inventory of lighting assets, helping authorities identify damaged units, service gaps and areas requiring additional coverage.
The proposed integration of the streetlight network with the city’s Integrated Command and Control Centre could introduce technology-based monitoring, including location tracking and real-time performance assessment. Such systems are increasingly being adopted in growing cities to reduce maintenance delays and improve operational efficiency. Experts note that better-managed public lighting has wider implications beyond basic infrastructure. Reliable street illumination can support safer mobility, especially for pedestrians, women, elderly citizens and late-hour workers, while efficient lighting systems can contribute to lower energy consumption through improved planning and adoption of smart technologies. The development comes as Gurugram continues to expand rapidly, with new residential neighbourhoods, commercial hubs and transport links increasing pressure on civic infrastructure. The city’s growth model increasingly depends on coordinated management of essential services across emerging urban zones.
A senior urban infrastructure official said that the transfer process will also involve reviewing pending contracts and contractor-related issues to ensure continuity during the handover. The focus remains on preventing service disruptions while establishing a more integrated maintenance framework.
