Gurugram authorities are preparing a fresh traffic management trial at Shankar Chowk, one of the city’s busiest mobility junctions, in an attempt to ease recurring congestion across Cyber City, Udyog Vihar and the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway corridor.
The proposed intervention reflects a growing push toward tactical urban mobility solutions in India’s rapidly densifying business districts. The plan, currently awaiting final clearance from highway authorities, proposes lane segregation and redesigned U-turn access along an 800-metre stretch linking Cyber City with the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. Traffic officials say the move is aimed at reducing conflict points created by merging vehicles from multiple directions, a problem that has worsened as commercial activity and office density continue to rise in the surrounding corporate hub. Shankar Chowk has long been identified as one of Gurugram’s most congested intersections, acting as a key gateway for commuters travelling between Delhi, Cyber City, Udyog Vihar and Old Delhi Road. Urban mobility analysts note that congestion here directly affects economic productivity, increasing travel time, fuel consumption and logistics costs for businesses operating in the area.
Under the revised traffic plan, the rightmost lane is expected to be reserved for vehicles heading into Cyber City, while the remaining lanes will channel traffic towards Delhi and adjoining industrial sectors. Authorities are also examining the feasibility of introducing an additional U-turn to streamline circulation from Udyog Vihar and Dhundahera. Transport planners say such lane-discipline models can deliver short-term gains, but their effectiveness depends heavily on signage, enforcement and pedestrian safety infrastructure. Previous decongestion experiments near Ambience Island and elevated corridor access points showed measurable improvements in peak-hour movement, encouraging authorities to replicate similar models at other choke points.
However, urban experts caution that road-based interventions alone may offer only temporary relief unless integrated with larger public transport and last-mile connectivity upgrades. For Gurugram, where office clusters continue to expand faster than transport infrastructure, the Shankar Chowk trial could become an important indicator of how tactical road engineering can support smoother commuter flows without major structural expansion. If approved, the pilot is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with officials monitoring traffic behaviour before considering permanent changes. For thousands of daily commuters, the experiment could determine whether one of the city’s most notorious bottlenecks can finally become more predictable.
