Gurugram: Gurugram is preparing for one of its largest urban sanitation upgrades, with municipal authorities initiating a long-term programme aimed at making roads and neighbourhood lanes cleaner while reducing dust pollution. The proposed five-year initiative, backed by an estimated investment of around ₹450 crore, reflects a shift towards planned maintenance rather than short-term cleaning contracts, with implications for public health, environmental compliance and urban liveability.
The project is designed to strengthen the city’s cleaning ecosystem by combining mechanised road sweeping with manual sanitation services across residential and commercial areas. Officials have initiated the tendering process after receiving approval for the proposed expenditure, signalling a move towards a structured and continuous approach to urban maintenance. A key component of the plan is the deployment of 72 road sweeping machines capable of operating across roads of varying widths. Larger mechanised sweepers are expected to handle arterial corridors, while smaller equipment will be assigned to narrower stretches where conventional machines have limited access. The objective is to minimise roadside dust accumulation, a major contributor to deteriorating air quality in rapidly urbanising cities. The Dust Free Streets initiative also proposes a significant expansion of the municipal workforce supporting sanitation operations. Around 2,500 personnel are expected to be engaged for locations where mechanised cleaning remains impractical, including footpaths, public spaces and dense neighbourhood lanes.
These workers would operate alongside the existing municipal sanitation workforce, enabling wider geographical coverage and more frequent maintenance. Urban planners note that sustained road cleaning has become increasingly important as cities confront higher particulate pollution caused by traffic movement, construction activity and dry weather conditions. While mechanised sweeping cannot replace broader air-quality interventions, it can reduce the re-suspension of road dust, particularly on heavily used transport corridors. When integrated with waste management, construction dust control and green infrastructure, such measures can contribute to healthier urban environments. The proposed programme also aligns with evolving environmental compliance requirements. National pollution-control agencies have in recent years encouraged urban local bodies to adopt scientific street-cleaning practices as part of broader efforts to curb particulate emissions.
Long-term contracts, experts say, often provide greater operational consistency than temporary arrangements, allowing cities to plan maintenance schedules, equipment deployment and workforce management more efficiently.
