The city’s municipal administration has formalised its participation in the Centre-backed initiative through an implementation partnership aimed at designing a localised heat action plan. The programme arrives at a time when Gurugram’s built-up landscape, dense road networks and shrinking green buffers are intensifying the urban heat island effect, pushing temperatures significantly higher than surrounding rural zones. Urban planners say the significance goes beyond summer discomfort. Rising heat exposure has become an economic and public health concern, especially for construction workers, delivery staff, street vendors and low-income households with limited cooling access. These findings will shape the city’s heat action plan, expected to guide both immediate and long-term responses. Officials involved in the process indicated that pilot interventions could include expanding tree cover, introducing reflective roofing systems, creating shaded pedestrian corridors and strengthening water conservation systems in public spaces.
