Gurugram: Construction of the proposed Bakhtawar Chowk Flyover integrated with the city’s metro corridor is expected to begin in August, subject to final engineering approvals. The project is being positioned as a key intervention to ease one of Gurugram’s busiest traffic intersections while supporting future public transport expansion and improving connectivity between residential, healthcare and commercial districts.
Officials associated with the project indicated that the engineering design has entered its final stage and is undergoing coordination between the metro implementing agency and the city’s urban development authority. The revised design is intended to accommodate both the elevated metro alignment and vehicular movement through a shared structural system, while also preserving space for a future underpass linking the Sector 47 side with the Medanta hospital corridor. The Bakhtawar Chowk Flyover forms part of Gurugram’s wider metro expansion programme, where transport planners are attempting to integrate multiple mobility modes instead of building separate structures. Urban planning experts note that such combined infrastructure can reduce land acquisition requirements, minimise repeated road excavation and improve long-term network efficiency when planned carefully.
According to officials involved in the project, the redesigned junction is expected to significantly increase traffic handling capacity by introducing additional through lanes beneath the metro alignment. While authorities estimate that the redesigned intersection could improve vehicle movement by around 50 per cent, transport specialists caution that sustained congestion relief will ultimately depend on complementary measures such as improved public transport use, pedestrian facilities and better traffic management rather than road expansion alone. The proposed infrastructure also reflects a broader shift in Indian cities towards integrating metro construction with road networks instead of developing parallel transport corridors independently. Such an approach can optimise public investment and reduce construction disruptions if executed with careful engineering and coordinated utility management. Meanwhile, preparatory work for the first phase of the Gurugram Metro project continues across other stretches of the corridor.
Authorities are prioritising the relocation of underground utilities, electricity lines and pipelines between Hero Honda Chowk and Umang Bhardwaj Chowk, as delays in these activities could affect the broader construction schedule. Officials expect key utility shifting work to progress through the year, allowing major civil construction to continue without significant interruptions. Land required for the initial phase has largely been transferred to the implementing agency, while acquisition and transfer for subsequent sections are being taken up in stages. Urban infrastructure analysts observe that timely land availability remains one of the most critical factors in keeping large transport projects on schedule. If construction begins as planned, the project could become an important test case for integrated urban mobility infrastructure in Gurugram. However, experts emphasise that long-term success will depend not only on faster vehicle movement but also on creating a transport system that supports lower emissions, efficient public mobility and safer access for all road users as the city continues to expand.
