The Gujarat government has sanctioned a substantial allocation of INR 2,204 crore under the Swarnim Jayanti Mukhyamantri Shaheri Vikas Yojana (SJMMSVY).
This initiative aims to revamp and enhance urban infrastructure across the state, aligning with the broader vision of creating eco-friendly, equitable, and resilient cities. The funds are earmarked for a diverse range of projects, including the construction and widening of roads, installation of underground drainage systems, development of stormwater lines, creation of gardens and libraries, establishment of recharge wells, city beautification efforts, unique identity projects, and the enhancement of social infrastructure.
This strategic allocation underscores the state’s commitment to fostering sustainable urban growth and improving the quality of life for its residents. The Gujarat government has declared 2025 as the ‘Urban Development Year,’ emphasizing its focus on comprehensive urban planning and development. The SJMMSVY, introduced in 2009-10, has been instrumental in upgrading urban infrastructure, focusing on water supply and underground drainage. Key projects under this scheme include the “Nal Se Jal” initiative for daily tap water supply, the establishment of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), and the integration of solar energy for operational efficiency.
The program is implemented by the Gujarat Urban Development Mission (GUDM), the Gujarat Municipal Finance Board, and other municipal authorities, ensuring a sustainable and efficient urban ecosystem. The state government provides 100% financial support for project implementation under this scheme. By focusing on localized demands and prioritizing essential services, the state aims to create more livable, sustainable, and resilient urban environments. This initiative not only promises to improve the urban landscape but also sets a precedent for future urban development strategies in the region.
The Gujarat government’s proactive approach in allocating substantial funds for urban development reflects its dedication to building cities that are not only economically vibrant but also environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive. As the state embarks on this transformative journey, the emphasis on eco-friendly initiatives and equitable growth serves as a model for other regions aiming to achieve holistic urban development.
