Guildford Railway Station Marks 180 Years

Guildford Railway Station in Surrey, England, commemorated its 180th anniversary over the recent bank holiday weekend, marking a significant milestone in its rich history.

Opened on 5 May 1845 by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR), the station has been a pivotal hub in the region’s transport network.
The celebrations, organised by the Friends of Guildford Railway Station in collaboration with the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership, featured a range of events led by volunteers, including former railway workers. Visitors were treated to a free exhibition showcasing vintage films and steam train sound recordings, offering a glimpse into the station’s storied past.

A notable highlight was the unveiling of a new display that traces the history of the local railway, complemented by ten blue plaques honouring the historical impact of women on the North Downs Line. These plaques celebrate figures such as Elsie Winterton, the first female member of the UK’s Institution of Railway Signal Engineers in 1923, and Dame Flora Shaw, an overseas correspondent who regularly used the trains.Sara Grisewood of the Southeast Communities Rail Partnership remarked, “The celebrations highlighted people who really made a difference in the past.” She emphasised the importance of recognising the contributions of women, noting the challenges in tracing their histories due to historical recording practices.

The arrival of electric trains at Guildford in 1925 marked a significant development in the station’s evolution. This advancement revolutionised travel, particularly benefiting the Rodboro Buildings in the town centre, believed to be one of the first purpose-built car factories in England and the world. The factory’s expansion was facilitated by the railway’s ability to bring workers to the site efficiently.As Guildford Railway Station looks to the future, plans for a multi-million-pound redevelopment are underway. The proposed project aims to enhance pedestrian links between the station and other parts of Guildford, and includes the development of a hotel.
