Greater Noida West Metro Moves Towards Final Clearance
Greater Noida West’s long-awaited public transport link has crossed a crucial approval stage, bringing the proposed metro connection closer to construction. The 8.4-kilometre elevated corridor has received clearance from the Public Investment Board (PIB) and will now move towards Union Cabinet consideration. For a rapidly expanding residential district, the decision could mark a shift away from road-dependent growth, although the project still requires final approval and timely execution.
The proposed line will connect Noida Sector 61 with Greater Noida West Sector 4, near Gaur Chowk, through five stations at Sectors 61, 70, 122, 123 and Sector 4. The corridor is expected to take around four years to build once construction begins. Its estimated cost is close to ₹2,000 crore, making the next approval stage important not only for commuters but also for the region’s wider infrastructure planning. The PIB’s role is significant because it examines the financial structure, expected ridership, project costs and broader economic justification of major public investment proposals. With the formal minutes of the meeting expected shortly, the proposal is expected to proceed to the Union Cabinet for the final decision. For residents, the urgency is rooted in the pace of development. Greater Noida West has expanded rapidly through large-scale housing construction, but public transport has not grown at the same speed.
Many daily journeys still depend on private vehicles, buses and road corridors that converge around heavily congested junctions. The Greater Noida West Metro could therefore improve access to employment, education and essential services while reducing pressure on road networks. The project’s history also highlights a wider challenge in NCR infrastructure planning. An earlier 18-kilometre proposal linking Sector 61 with Knowledge Park V was revised after concerns over its overlap with the proposed Ghaziabad-Jewar regional rapid transit corridor. The shorter alignment reflects an attempt to resolve competing transport plans and move forward with a more immediate connection. Urban planners say the corridor’s value will depend on more than laying tracks.
Safe pedestrian access, feeder buses, universal accessibility and integration with existing and planned transit networks will determine whether residents can genuinely shift from private vehicles to public transport. These links will be especially important for women, older residents, children and people with mobility limitations. The Cabinet decision is now the next major milestone. If approval is secured and construction follows without further delays, the corridor could help bring transport capacity closer to the scale of Greater Noida West’s population and housing growth. The larger test, however, will be whether future development is planned around reliable, low-emission mobility rather than adding more homes before the infrastructure needed to connect them.
