The Gopal Krishna Gokhale Bridge in Andheri has become fully operational, restoring a vital east-west link that had been disrupted since its closure in November 2022 due to structural concerns.
The bridge’s reopening is expected to alleviate traffic congestion and improve commute times for residents and commuters in the area. The reconstruction project, managed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), faced multiple challenges, including delays in girder installation and alignment issues with the adjacent Barfiwala Flyover. Despite these hurdles, the BMC expedited the remaining work, completing the second phase of the bridge by April 2025. This phase included the installation of crash barriers, asphalting, street lighting, and road markings, ensuring the bridge met safety and usability standards.
The Gokhale Bridge serves as a critical connector between Andheri East and West, areas with substantial residential and commercial activity. Its closure had forced commuters to rely on alternative routes like the Andheri Subway and Captain Vinayak Gore Flyover, leading to increased travel times and congestion.
