Goa Pushes for 24×7 Water as Centre Reviews Urban Plan

The central government has agreed to consider Goa’s proposal for a ₹652.61 crore ‘Drink from Tap’ (DfT) project aimed at providing 24×7 potable water supply across the state.

The assurance came during a high-level review meeting held in Panaji between the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Goa’s Chief Minister, focusing on the progress of key urban development initiatives. The DfT project, seeking ₹326.30 crore in central assistance under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0, encompasses water source augmentation, infrastructure development, rehabilitation of existing networks, and the implementation of smart metering and IoT-based monitoring systems. The Union Minister acknowledged the proposal and directed concerned officials to evaluate the request under the scheme .

Goa’s unique urban challenges, particularly the seasonal surge in tourist numbers, place additional stress on the state’s civic infrastructure. Recognizing this, the Chief Minister requested enhanced support under AMRUT 2.0 and the Swachh Bharat Mission – Urban (SBM-U) 2.0. The Union Minister agreed to consider necessary policy changes to support tourist-heavy states . The review meeting also covered the progress of other flagship programmes, including the Smart Cities Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U), Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), and PM Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi). The Union Minister emphasized the need for Goa to expedite pending water supply and sanitation projects, revise action plans, and improve proposal submission timelines .

Furthermore, the state was encouraged to inform citizens about PMAY-U 2.0 to boost housing uptake and to submit proposals for the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme to improve clean mobility in urban areas. The Union Minister called for stronger strategic planning and public-private partnerships to support sustainable urbanization in Goa .
